This is the first in a series of posts from our team sharing what life is like working for an agency which operates a remote location-agnostic model. I am Bastian Meger, a consultant at Tyto, and this is my location-agnostic life.

Location agnostic working is an approach to working that means employees can choose where their day to day office is. For some people, the idea of working from home is highly desirable. For others who potentially prefer a livelier work environment or who don’t have suitable home office space, this might not be the best option. The alternative for these employees is for them to work from a convenient co-working space. You can read more about our location-agnostic model.

In this series, we want to highlight the freedom our model enables and how we navigate any challenges it presents.

What’s your morning routine?

My alarm clock usually goes off at 6:50 am. Since I don’t have to commute to an office, I always try to get outside before I start to work. So I either go for a run or a short walk. Afterwards, I make myself a huge cup of green tea and wake up my MacBook.

How do you organise your day?

I usually start my working day by reviewing what our US clients have shared with us overnight. Then I take a look at my diary and to-do list to plan my day. Usually, I identify the most important tasks and try to complete them in the morning. If I have a full day, I also block some time in my diary to do certain tasks. Then I just start working.

When are you the most productive?

If I need to draft a lot of content, I usually do it early in the morning before the rest of the team is online. For these tasks, it’s actually quite handy that the UK team starts work an hour later.

What is your favourite workplace?

My office at home. I enjoy not having to commute every day. It’s great that I can choose the furniture and hardware in my office. My kitchen is just a few steps away and if I am done working, I am already at home. But I think it’s important to have an extra room to work in, otherwise, it can be hard to work comfortably and without distraction.

What’s your favourite thing about working remotely?

The freedom to work from anywhere and in theory at any time. My work is very important to me, but I no longer have to plan everything around it. I can integrate my work into my life and as a result, I live in my German hometown – close to the Black Forest and far away from a big city – and can still do PR for exciting clients.

What do you miss?

Of course, sometimes I miss the good times with colleagues in the office. I try to make up for it by regularly calling friends just to chat during my lunch break. Additionally, we have in normal times regular team meetups which I always look forward to. That helps!

What’s your secret weapon?

My to-do list. I use Microsoft To Do and I couldn’t survive a day without it. Every new task I try to collect almost immediately. After I put it on my list, it’s out of my head and in a safe place and won’t get lost. I even set a due date for each task. After I have completed a task, it is always a pleasure to check it off the list.
